Out of the taboo zone: help for addicts in old age

In Brandenburg, older people with addictions are to be better supported in recognizing and coping with their problem. The "selbstbestimmt" (self-determined) project of the Brandenburg State Office for Addiction Issues (BLS) has published various information materials with suggestions for conversations in difficult situations, offers of help and tips for mental health. This was announced by the Brandenburg Ministry of Health on Wednesday. Together with the GKV Alliance for Health - a joint initiative of the statutory health insurance funds - the ministry is supporting the project.

According to the information provided, the background to this is that the body reacts more sensitively to alcohol consumption with increasing age. In particular, the mixture of medication and alcohol can become a problem. However, many people find it difficult to face up to potentially risky consumption, according to the Ministry of Health. "Relatives in particular are often unsure when they notice conspicuous consumption behavior in someone close to them, but those affected often don't know what to do either," explained Andrea Hardeling, BLS Managing Director. The project aims to raise awareness and educate people.

According to the ministry, around 15 percent of people who come to addiction counseling centers in Brandenburg are over 57 years old. At the same time, alcohol is the problem area with the oldest clientele on average in outpatient addiction support facilities. Addiction among older people can be caused by various factors: retirement, the loss of loved ones, feelings of loneliness or health problems. Combined with medication, alcohol can be life-threatening.

According to Daniela Teichert, CEO of AOK Nordost, illnesses such as diabetes or high blood pressure, which tend to occur in old age, can even be exacerbated by excessive alcohol consumption.

Maintaining the quality of life of older people is an important social responsibility, said Brandenburg's Health Minister Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens). "This includes taking addiction and its negative consequences out of the 'taboo zone' and making those affected and their personal environment able to speak and act."

Older adults with health issues, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, should be mindful of their alcohol consumption as it can exacerbate these diseases. The self-determined project by the Brandenburg State Office for Addiction Issues offers tips and mental health support for older individuals dealing with addiction, recognizing the sensitivity of the body to alcohol with age and the potential dangers of mixing medications with alcohol.
