Bundesliga 2 - Osnabrück coach Koschinat: Show other defenses
After his sobering debut as coach of second-division soccer club VfL Osnabrück, Uwe Koschinat expects a different attitude from his team in the match against league leaders FC St. Pauli. "We have to show a completely different defensive spirit, especially in view of the absolute top team in the 2nd division with FC St. Pauli," said the 52-year-old in an interview on the club's website on Thursday.
Koschinat took over from Tobias Schweinsteiger a week and a half ago. In his first match last Friday, he and the team at the bottom of the table suffered a 4-0 defeat at FC Schalke 04.
Now he and his team face the biggest challenge in the league at the moment in his home debut. "They've completely forgotten how to lose," said Koschinat about FC St. Pauli. "They master every situation. They dominate with their style of play and intensity."
He sees the fact that the game takes place on Saturday (8.30pm/Sky and Sport1) as an advantage. "We have an even more exposed position on Saturday evening. It's a game with a unique selling point," he said. "People will be watching us. Logically, we want to show a completely different face."
How unequal the duel appears is not only shown by the standings, but also by the points: Before the 16th matchday, the Hamburgers from the Kiez have 24 points more than the Osnabrückers. Ten points separate VfL from the first non-relegation place. The promoted team has only managed one win so far - but that was against St. Pauli's city and promotion rivals Hamburger SV.
"In the end, it's about consolidating ourselves as a group with one type of soccer," said Koschinat as the goal of his work in the coming weeks. That won't work "with a new idea every weekend. And it definitely has to be the case that we bring a completely different mentality, a completely different activity onto the pitch." In Osnabrück's situation, it would be bad to "hope that we can only avoid mistakes by being passive".
