Potsdam - Organ for the chapel in the garrison church tower is installed
Six months before the planned opening, the installation of the new organ in the chapel of the rebuilt tower of Potsdam's Garrison Church has begun. The organ, built by the Schuke company in Werder/Havel, will be delivered on Thursday and installed from Friday, according to Wieland Eschenburg, spokesman for the Garrison Church Foundation. The instrument will now be installed and voiced in the chapel on the first floor of the tower by mid-February. The Garrison Church Tower with its viewing platform at a height of 57 meters is scheduled to open in early summer 2024.
"This organ will turn the Garrison Church Tower into a place of musical learning," said Eschenburg. The instrument is equipped with two organs - on the east side of the chapel with a baroque sound and on the west side with a romantic sound. In this way, the sound of different musical eras can be experienced, explained Eschenburg. The corresponding console can be connected at different points in the chapel. This allows concertgoers to experience the organist in their midst.
The Garrison Church was badly destroyed during the Second World War and was blown up in 1968 at the behest of the GDR leadership. Several initiatives, including Christian ones, oppose the reconstruction of the Garrison Church tower. Opponents see the historic building as a symbol of militarism and a meeting place for right-wing nationalist movements in the 1920s and 1930s.
