- Orchids' path is nominated for "Nature's Wonder of the Year"
The Orchid Trail in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau in Saarland is among the candidates for the "Natural Wonder of the Year 2024". The Heinz Sielmann Foundation and the German Hiking Association are calling on all nature lovers to cast their online vote for natural phenomena and sights. There are nine natural wonders to choose from, all of which can be visited along hiking trails, the German Hiking Association announced in Kassel. The initiative aims to strengthen environmental awareness and protect nature.
The Orchid Trail in the southwest of Saarland winds through the Orchid Area of Gersheim, which is said to host nearly half of the orchid species found in Germany. "The Mediterranean climate and nutrient-poor soils foster rare ecosystems," the initiators said. The other candidates for the "Natural Wonder of the Year" come from Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, and Thuringia.
The Orchid Trail, being a natural wonder in Bliesgau, showcases the diverse ecosystems uniquely supported by its Mediterranean climate and nutrient-poor soils, a testament to the beauty and complexity of The nature in this region. Proving that natural wonders abound throughout Germany, the Heinz Sielmann Foundation encourages voting for other stunning candidates, including those found in various other parts of this renowned European country.
