Orban links approval of Ukraine aid to release of all EU funds for Hungary
At the EU summit on Thursday, the Hungarian head of government used his veto to block the disbursement of further EU aid to Ukraine amounting to 50 billion euros. The talks were not to be continued on the second day of the summit on Friday. According to EU Council President Charles Michel, the 27 EU heads of state and government will therefore meet again at the beginning of next year.
The EU Commission had proposed an increase in the EU budget in order to save Ukraine from economic collapse. There was also haggling over a further increase in the EU budget framework until 2027. 20 billion euros were recently under discussion, including for external border protection and migration agreements with third countries. According to diplomats, an agreement also failed due to Hungary.
A connection was suspected with EU funds for Hungary, which are being withheld due to violations of the rule of law. The EU Commission released ten billion euros of these funds on Wednesday, while a further twelve billion euros remain frozen. However, Orban initially emphasized that there was no connection with the Ukraine issues.
