Education - Opposition: Need for action after Pisa results
Education associations and the state parliament opposition see an urgent need for action following the poor performance of German pupils in the international Pisa performance study. The reasons for the poor performance are manifold, explained Lars Lamowski, state chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate Education Association (VBE), in Mainz on Tuesday. In addition to the shortage of teachers and the consequences of the corona pandemic in connection with a lack of digitalization, the structurally poorly positioned schools are another construction site.
"The canceled and substituted lessons have consequences," said the VBE chairman. "Politicians must significantly expand their efforts to combat the shortage of teachers." The Pisa results clearly signaled the need for action in the education system.
German pupils performed worse than ever before in the international Pisa performance comparison in 2022. Both in reading and in mathematics and science, these are the lowest values ever measured for Germany in the Pisa study. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the average performance has also fallen drastically internationally.
Cornelia Schwartz, state chairwoman of the Rhineland-Palatinate Philologists' Association, also referred to a statement in the Pisa study, according to which, on average, less distraction from digital devices was recorded in mathematics lessons in the OECD if cell phone use was prohibited on school grounds. Schwartz explained that pupils must of course learn to use digital media sensibly and responsibly. Nevertheless, digital media have an enormous psychological pull.
As a consequence of the results, the Free Voters demanded a teacher supply of at least 110 percent. The student body has become more heterogeneous in recent years, said the opposition group's education expert, Helge Schwab. In order to do justice to this fact and to be able to cope with the heterogeneity, there must be many more teachers in the classes. "The balancing act between children in large and heterogeneous learning groups is otherwise impossible to manage."
