A film student from the Film University Babelsberg is in the running for a Student Emmy this year. With the short film "Shell," the 1994-born filmmaker Jens Kevin Georg has made it to the finalists at the Student Academy Awards. Out of 28 productions from a total of 2683 submissions from film schools worldwide, Georg's film is now in the final round. According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, the awards for the short films will be presented in four categories on October 29 in California.

"Shell" is among the seven finalists in the short film category "Narrative" (live-action), alongside contributions from Italy, Poland, the UK, the Czech Republic, and the USA. At the end, three films in this category will receive the Student Emmy in gold, silver, and bronze. Other categories include documentary, animation, and experimental film.

Filmmaker and scriptwriter Georg tells a story about growing up and self-discovery in the approximately 30-minute short film. A 12-year-old boy named Fabi faces the challenge of being accepted as a full-fledged family member. To do this, he must present a first, major wound that has healed into a scar. The short film, which was created at the Konrad Wolf Film University in Potsdam-Babelsberg, has already been shown at several festivals.

Last fall, German director Tamara Denić won the Student Emmy in bronze in the "Narrative" category with her graduation film "Istina" (Truth) at the Hamburg Media School (HMS).

Since 1972, the Academy has honored international directors and young talents from film schools in the USA with these awards. The Student Emmy has proven to be a stepping stone for a Hollywood career. Filmmakers such as John Lasseter ("Toy Story"), Spike Lee ("Malcolm X"), Robert Zemeckis ("Back to the Future"), and Cary Fukunaga ("No Time to Die") are among the former winners.

The 1994-born filmmaker Jens Kevin Georg is eagerly awaiting the presentation of the Student Emmy in gold, silver, or bronze for his short film "Shell" in the "Narrative" category. Should he emerge victorious, "Shell" could potentially serve as a springboard for Georg to embark on a successful Hollywood career, following in the footsteps of past winners like John Lasseter and Spike Lee.
