Operator sticks to plans for new Kampenwand cable car

The operator of the Kampenwand cable car wants to stick to its plans for the new construction even after the setback in court. This is because the administrative court has "not completely called into question" the renovation project, said the Managing Director of Kampenwandseilbahn GmbH, Eric Zbil, according to a statement following the ruling published on Wednesday. "The identified vagueness of the new permit can and must now be eliminated."

The Administrative Court in Munich had halted plans to build the new Kampenwand cable car in the Bavarian Alps for the time being. The approval from 2022 has been revoked, the Munich Administrative Court announced on Wednesday. The decision by the Rosenheim district office, against which the Bund Naturschutz had filed a lawsuit, was vague and therefore unlawful.

It was criticized that the decision did not clearly state where and to what extent trees were to be felled. It could therefore not be ruled out that trees would have to be felled in the natural forest.

Zibl rejected this: The Kampenwand cable car can prove that the "future extended cable car route will not touch any natural forest designated in the area along its entire length", he emphasized. "This means that this hurdle can also be successfully overcome."

The cable car to the 1669-metre-high, popular excursion mountain above Chiemgau was built in the 1950s. According to the operators, they wanted to "renovate it moderately" and adapt the gondolas and stations, including the technology, to today's expectations - among other things, wheelchair users should also be able to use the lift without barriers.

After the ruling became known on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Rosenheim District Office emphasized that the operator of the Kampenwandbahn could submit a new application for approval. The ruling of the administrative court, which was celebrated by conservationists, does not necessarily mean that the modernization plans for the cable car have to be stopped.

Despite the legal setback, municipalities involved in the tourism sector may continue to support the cable car project's processes, as the administrative court did not completely invalidate the renovation plans. Leisure time enthusiasts might still look forward to enhanced experiences at Kampenwand, considering the operator's commitment to eliminate the permit's vagueness.
