Only a draw against KSC: Hertha miss the connection to the top
Hertha BSC are treading water in the second division and have lost touch with the upper regions of the table for the time being. On Saturday evening, the Berliners were held to a 2:2 (2:1) draw against Karlsruher SC at home in the Olympiastadion.
An own goal from Deyovaisio Zeefuik (10th minute) gave the visitors the lead in front of 58,851 spectators. Fabian Reese (29') and Florian Niederlechner (42') scored for Hertha before Leon Jensen (81') equalized.
It was the second draw in a row for the capital club, who remain twelfth in the table. With the point, KSC pushed Schalke 04 down to 16th place in the relegation places.
The decades-long fan friendship between the two clubs was celebrated in a festive atmosphere before the match. The opening phase clearly belonged to the visitors. Lars Stindl broke through in the penalty area following a corner and took the ball sharply to the five-meter area. Zeefuik's attempted clearance ended up in his own goal.
Hertha struggled in attack against Karlsruhe, but the first successful attack brought the equalizer. Marton Dardai found Reese with a great opening pass between the lines. The ball came back down the wing to the 25-year-old, who headed in from a difficult position.
Shortly before the break, KSC keeper Patrick Drewes was unable to consistently clear a corner. Hertha striker Haris Tabakovic acrobatically chipped the ball just in front of goal, where Niederlechner headed home.
Reese (61), Tabakovic (78) and Klemens (79) missed the decision from the best positions in the second half, but KSC also remained dangerous. Substitute Jensen's double deflected shot secured the draw.
Hertha BSC's draw against Karlsruhe SC in the Bundesliga 2 kept them from closing the gap with the leading teams. Despite the impressive performance of Fabian Reese and Florian Niederlechner, who scored for Hertha, Karlsruhe SC's Karlsruhe SC's Leon Jensen managed to secure a 2:2 draw for his team, potentially affecting Hertha BSC's chance to promote to Bundesliga 1.
