Sheep farming - Online land exchange brokers meadows to shepherds
Unused areas in Thuringen will be assigned for grazing over the Internet to sheep farmers. The Nature Foundation David of the environmental association BUND has developed an online pasture exchange for this purpose. Landowners can offer meadows where they require animal lawn mowers. Conversely, sheep farmers of the network "Weidewonne" founded by the Foundation can search for landowners.
According to the Foundation, the network includes 25 sheep farms, ranging from hobby farmers with a few animals to larger operations. The platform acts only as an intermediary, as stated by the Foundation. The specific conditions and details of grazing are understood individually between sheep farmers and landowners.
"Previously unused areas can be easily assigned through the pasture exchange and sustainably managed," said Project Manager Stefanie Schroeter. "This significantly contributes to the preservation of biodiversity and care of cultural landscapes."
The online pasture exchange developed by the BUND's Nature Foundation in Thuringia allows sheep farmers to find unused meadows for grazing, such as the ones offered by the landowners in the region. With the help of this platform, farmers from the "Weidewonne" network can sustainably manage and preserve biodiversity in Bund-assigned pastures.
