- One seriously injured after fire at historic cathedral
The fire department has concluded extinguishing operations at the historic residence near the Verden Cathedral. Yesterday, a 65-year-old man was severely injured in the fire, a police spokesperson reported. Two others are considered lightly injured.
The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon in the timber-framed house, built in 1670 according to the inscription. As the flames spread, the roof collapsed. The roof of the neighboring house also caught fire. In the afternoon, the fire department, with a large contingent, had largely brought the fire under control. However, due to hotspots, the emergency services were still engaged until just before 3:00 AM on Thursday morning.
According to police, the road closures in the city center were lifted early in the morning. The affected building is no longer habitable or accessible due to the fire. The same applies to the neighboring house, which suffered at least damage from smoke and soot. The police have not yet been able to quantify the property damage. As soon as the site can be accessed, they will begin the investigation.
The fire that had been extinguished by the fire department left the historic residence and its neighboring house uninhabitable due to damage. Smoke and soot from the fire caused significant damage to the neighboring house, and the flames even managed to spread to its roof.
