Social - One million euros for "Winteraktion Saar"

This year, the Saarland state government is continuing its winter campaign "Saarland moves closer together" for those in need. As Social Affairs Minister Magnus Jung (SPD) announced on Tuesday, the state is making one million euros available for this purpose until March. Applications have currently been submitted for 45 winter cafés and 25 distribution points for aid packages. Further projects could still be considered.

"I am delighted that there is a great force of solidarity in Saarland that we can always fall back on," said Jung. The state launched the programme for the first time a year ago with various offers of help together with social associations, clubs, organizations and church sponsors and reached more than 10,000 people. The aim was to provide additional, low-threshold support and advice in the face of rising energy and food prices.

According to Jung, in addition to alleviating material hardship and offering free or low-cost meals, the aim is also to strengthen social participation. "Every winter café is also a way out of loneliness," he said. One of the key aspects of the campaign is "that visitors meet other people there, are no longer alone, experience community and also recharge their batteries with courage and hope."

Thanks to the great support of the Winter Action Network, the participatory project is growing steadily, so that with the exception of Merzig-Wadern, offers are available in all districts. There are currently 31 winter cafés across Saarland, with 10 more to be added from January. He also attributed the fact that the number was significantly lower than a year ago to the fact that many providers had stabilized their offers and were no longer dependent on temporary support from the state.

However, Jung also pointed out that the winter campaign was primarily only effective against the symptoms of poverty. The long-term goal must be a structural fight against poverty, especially at federal level. The citizen's income remains an important instrument for this. In his opinion, no savings should be made on this standard rate in the future either, as it only secures the minimum subsistence level.
