Survey - One in three people will spend less on Christmas presents in 2023 - and some will spend nothing at all

One in three people in Germany have a lower budget for Christmas presents this year than last year. And almost one in five will not be buying any presents at all for the festive season. These are the findings of a representative online survey conducted by YouGov for the classifieds portal, which was published in advance by stern .

In the survey, 31 percent said they had less money available for Christmas presents this year than last year. In contrast, 44 percent have the same amount available and 15 percent even have a higher budget for gifts than last year. The rest did not provide any information.

Gift budgets range from zero to more than 1000 euros

People in Germany spend very different absolute amounts on Christmas gifts: 42% of respondents plan to spend less than 200 euros in total. 28 percent have set themselves a budget of between 200 and 500 euros for all gifts combined. And 12 percent are particularly generous, spending more than 500 euros - a third of this group even spend more than 1000 euros. In addition, a total of 18 percent do not buy any Christmas presents at all - that is almost one in five people in Germany. However, the survey did not ask whether this was for financial or other reasons.

What was asked, however, was what people do to save money when buying Christmas presents. Many consumers look out for offers, discounts and promotions (32%) or have specifically picked up Black Friday bargains (21%). However, 23% of respondents also say that they are simply buying fewer gifts this year. Some are focusing more on homemade gifts (11 percent) or giving gifts for joint activities that don't cost much (10 percent). Only a few gift buyers are switching to second-hand goods (5 percent), buying repaired or refurbished (refurbished) devices (5 percent) or B-goods and returned goods (4 percent).

For the online survey, 1071 people were interviewed between December 13 and 14. According to YouGov, the survey is representative of the German population aged 18 and over.
