Berlin - One in six students uses state student funding

According to an analysis, around one in six (around 16 percent) of students in Berlin finance their studies with the help of student grants, state loans or scholarships. This puts the proportion at the same level as the national average, according to an analysis published on Friday by the CHE Center for Higher Education Development. The analysis is based on a compilation of various sources and refers to the year 2022.

According to the data, more than 23,200 students in the capital received Bafög last year. Around 2,600 received a scholarship from a scholarship organization for gifted students and more than 1,100 received a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship.

According to the CHE analysis, around five out of six students nationwide in 2022 received neither Bafög nor state loans or scholarships. Financial support from parents and part-time jobs are the most important sources of student funding, emphasized study author Ulrich Müller according to the press release. There is a need for reform. If the system of student financing in Germany remains unchanged, "in future, success at university will depend more and more on whether you have rich parents or are enrolled on a flexible degree course that is compatible with part-time jobs". This does not have much to do with "equitable participation in higher education".
