"On Day X", Arson-related Accusations are Dropped by the Court

Demonstrations ignited on 'Day X' following the judge's ruling in a trial involving a radical left-wing extremist.

Almost a year and a half following the public disturbances stemming from the radical left-wing event known as "Day X" in Leipzig, a 25-year-old individual has seen numerous allegations brought against them by the authorities dismissed. The presiding jury declared they could not definitively identify the accused in the available footage, due to their masked appearance and swift movement.

The prosecution filed charges against the individual towards the end of May, which included an attempt at murder in two instances and 18 counts of grievous bodily harm. However, the charge of causing a public disturbance is the only one that can proceed, according to a court spokesperson, with the local court handling that case. Previously, this was reported by the "Leipzig Volkszeitung".

Prosecution contests ruling

"An immediate appeal has been lodged in response to the Regional Court's decision," affirmed Vanessa Fink, the spokesperson for the prosecution, upon request. The Higher Regional Court of Dresden (OLG) will now be the ones to determine the outcome. Current information suggests an undetermined timeline for the OLG's decision.

The prosecution was confident that the suspect had hurled two Molotov cocktails, stones, and pyrotechnics at police officers on June 3, 2022. According to the investigators' assessment, the suspect potentially recognized the possibility that the officers might sustain fatal injuries. Fortunately, no casualties occurred due to the Molotov cocktails.

Unrest after court verdict against Lina E.

During these proceedings, a total of 18 police officers reported sustaining injuries, according to the prosecution. They were targeted with stones and fireworks by the crowd. Additionally, the prosecution suspected the individual in this matter. He surrendered to the investigative authorities at the beginning of January and had been in custody since then. At the end of June, he was released from custody due to the judges at the Regional Court in Leipzig failing to discover any substantial proof against him.

"Day X" was a response to the conviction of the radical left-wing student Lina E. for her involvement in assaults against neo-Nazis. Riots occurred around June 3, 2022, in Leipzig.

The received charges against the individual will be reviewed by the Higher Regional Court of Dresden, as per the Prosecutor's Office's appeal. Despite numerous allegations, several charges against the individual, including attempt at murder and grievous bodily harm, have been dismissed due to insufficient evidence.

In light of the Regional Court's verdict, The Office of the Prosecutor undertook an immediate appeal, believing there was sufficient evidence to convict the individual for their role in causing a public disturbance during "Day X" events.
