The city of Munich wants to set up a so-called on-call bus system. This was decided by the city council's mobility committee on Wednesday. Passengers will be able to order the on-call buses by phone or smartphone app and specify their destination, according to the SPD/Volt city council faction. A route will then be calculated to bundle several passengers.

Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) plans to start with 50 vehicles in 2025. The service will then be gradually expanded over four years and will eventually comprise 100 vehicles. With the on-call buses, the city of Munich wants to close a gap in the local transport system. According to the city council, the service is particularly important for older people and people with disabilities. The on-demand service is set to cost just under 50 million euros.

In the future, the on-call bus system in Munich might be beneficial for commuters using vehicles, as it could provide an additional option for transportation, especially for elderly people and individuals with disabilities. The SPD/Volt city council faction suggests that this service, funded by approximately 50 million euros, might also attract other residents in Bavaria who frequently visit Munich given its popular tourist destinations and events.
