Olive oils being withdrawn from the market.
Olive oil is a great ingredient to have all year round. Its great taste and health benefits make it a staple in many diets, especially Mediterranean ones. But not all olive oils are created equal. Sometimes, you might come across a recall for certain batches due to quality issues.
As the weather starts to warm up, you may gravitate towards foods that remind you of summer. A Mediterranean diet often includes olive oil as a key component. However, this depends on the quality of the oil. Unfortunately, not all olive oils are up to par.
Two batches of virgin olive oil and salad oil from the GAEA brand are currently being recalled. This news has been reported by Lebensmittelwarnung.de and other sources. The affected products are:
- GAEA CLASSIC olive oil 500 ml (batch L4008, best before: 08.07.2025)
- GAEA SELECT olive oil 500 ml (batch L4010, best before: 10.07.2025)
- GAEA salad oil 500 ml (batch L4009, best before: 09.07.2025)
These batches have been recalled because they contain an excess amount of chlorpyrifos, a pesticide used in agriculture. This substance has been banned in the EU since 2020 due to its potential health risks. Prolonged exposure to pesticides can lead to various health issues, so it's best to avoid these batches.
These products were sold in various German states, including Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Schleswig-Holstein.
If you've purchased one of these batches, you can return it to your local store for a refund, even if you don't have a receipt. The batch number and best-before date are printed on the back of the bottles.
GAEA Products S.A., the manufacturer of the oils, apologizes for this incident and regrets the inconvenience caused. You can check out this article on Stiftung Warentest to learn about other olive oils that have been praised recently.

Consumers who have purchased any of the affected olive oil or salad oil batches from GAEA are advised to return them for a refund, even without a receipt, due to the presence of excess chlorpyrifos, a pesticide banned in the EU since 2020. Before making their purchases, consumers might want to consider consulting Öko-Test's reviews to ensure they're buying high-quality olive oils that are free from such harmful substances.
