Basketball - Oldenburg on the brink of progressing in the Champions League

The basketball team EWE Baskets Oldenburg has taken a big step towards the next round of the Champions League. The Bundesliga club defeated Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir from Turkey by 97:88 (46:58) on Wednesday. The best scorer for Pedro Calles' team was DeWayne Russell with 22 points.

As a result of the win, Oldenburg climbed up the table and has also won the head-to-head meetings against Izmir and Filou Oostende. A win by more than two points in the final match next Wednesday (8 p.m.) at SIG Strasbourg and a simultaneous defeat by Izmir against Oostende would even see the club from Lower Saxony progress directly to the round of 16 as group winners. The teams in second and third place will have to take a detour via the play-ins. However, Oldenburg could still be eliminated if they lose.

The first quarter was evenly balanced. Neither team was able to gain a decisive advantage. That changed in the second period, when the visitors were more consistent, especially under the basket, and opened up an eight-point lead. However, the home side quickly came back and took the lead again for the first time with one minute remaining in the third period (68:67). It remained tight and tense until the end. In the end, Oldenburg prevailed somewhat fortunately, but deservedly so.
