Oldenburg children's and young adult book fair starts

The 49th Oldenburg Children's and Young People's Book Fair (Kibum) begins on Saturday with a Swiss alphorn and children playing stories. The motto of this year's fair is "Grüezi! Kibum meets Switzerland", according to the organizers. There will be 19 authors and illustrators from Switzerland - including Zurich children's book author Katja Alves, who will be standing in for patron Franz Hohler on stage due to illness.

Until November 21, the fair will feature around 250 events, including readings for schools and daycare centers as well as a conference for professionals. Visitors can browse through more than 2000 new publications, with more than 360 titles for children aged ten and over. Even the very little ones will get their money's worth, as they can choose from almost 880 freshly printed picture books.

The fair's online supporting program promises insights into Swiss children's and young adult book studios. Two exhibitions are also dedicated to literature from the Alpine republic. On November 20, the Children's and Young Adult Book Prize, endowed with 8,000 euros, will be awarded.

According to the organizers, Kibum is the largest non-commercial fair of its kind in Germany. It is organized by the city of Oldenburg and the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg.

The fair will attract numerous children and youth, eager to discover the wide range of literature from Switzerland. During the fair, many events like readings and conferences are specifically tailored for children and young adults.
