Due to an oil leak, the Main in Würzburg is closed to navigation. A large-scale operation is currently underway in the industrial area of the New Harbor, the city of Würzburg reported. According to this, an unknown amount of oil leaked from a storage facility in the evening, flowing both into the Main and onto the green strip along the river.

An oil barrier has been installed along the entire length of the contaminated area to protect the waterway. Currently, the Professional Fire Brigade Würzburg is coordinating with the Waterway and Shipping Authority to determine the necessary further measures. The cause of the oil leak is still unknown.

Personnel from the Professional Fire Brigade Würzburg, two volunteer fire departments, and the THW, as well as rescue services and the Waterway and Shipping Authority, are on site. A drone from the Johanniter is supporting the helpers.

The cleanup efforts to contain the oil spill have extended beyond Würzburg, as specialist teams from Bavaria have been brought in to assist. The contaminated area in Bavaria's waterways could significantly impact local wildlife and ecosystems.
