Animals - Offspring of endangered lemur species at Opel Zoo
In Opel-Zoo in Kronberg, a Red Varie lemur, an endangered species, has been born. The young one is now regularly seen in the outdoor enclosure and can be observed by visitors, the zoo announced on a Wednesday. The animal is reportedly born around mid-May.
The Red Varie is found only on the Masoala Peninsula in Madagascar. The species is threatened by deforestation and illegal hunting. The population of Red Varies in Madagascar has decreased by more than 80% within the last 24 years. Last year, twins of this lemur species were born in the Kronberger Zoo, and in 2022, a male young one.
