Officer injured by knife in Mannheim succumbs to wounds.

A police officer underwent surgery following a recent incident and was placed into a medically induced coma. He regrettably passed away on Sunday afternoon as per a statement released.

Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), responded to the news, stating, "This news is heart-rending for me. I send my condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased."

Kretschmann went on to emphasize how police officers frequently face unpredictable dangers. "The police force in Baden-Württemberg and I share in your deep sorrow at this difficult time," he added.

Similarly, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) shared his dismay. "I'm appalled to learn of the death of the valiant policeman after the harrowing incident in Mannheim," Scholz's statement read. "His service to our safety is highly commendable."

Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) also revealed his shock. "The loss of the young police officer greatly saddens me. Not only is this devastating, it incites rage towards the inequality occurring in our country. We need to take a stand against Islamic terrorism," Lindner wrote on social media. "More funding will be directed towards strengthening our security agencies. We can no longer tolerate complacency."

The attacker sustained gunshot wounds and was initially unable to be questioned. A 25-year-old man from Afghanistan, who has been a German resident since 2014, was the suspect. He had no prior connection with the authorities before the incident. The Mannheim District Court issued an arrest warrant for him on the charge of attempted murder.

The PAX Europa treasurer, Stefanie Kizina, had disclosed to the "Bild" newspaper that the attempted attack targeted the organization's board member, Michael Stürzenberger. The 59-year-old sustained facial injuries from a knife during the incident.

As per authorities, Stürzenberger was involved in the leadership of PAX Europa in the past and authored articles on the right-extremist website, Political Incorrect. Kizina claims Stürzenberger voiced "Islamophobic statements," as stated on the website of the Bavarian Information Center Against Extremism.
