Offenburg initially waives funeral service for pupils
Following the shooting at a school, the city of Offenburg has decided not to hold a public memorial service for the pupil who was killed. "We are putting the family's feelings first", explained Mayor Marco Steffens (CDU) on Wednesday. The city leadership had written to the family to express their condolences.
Investigators suspect a 15-year-old of having shot the peer in the classroom of the Waldbach special education school. The German has since been in custody on suspicion of manslaughter. The alleged attack and its consequences have caused quite a stir in the Baden municipality, which has a population of around 62,000.
At a press conference on Tuesday, investigators did not provide any detailed information about the pupil who was killed. He died in hospital shortly after the attack.
As the head of the town hall announced, the local St. Andreas community foundation is providing immediate aid of 5,000 euros for the victim's family. A municipal donation account will also be set up. The community foundation has its roots in the Middle Ages and sees itself as a local community of solidarity.
The shooting incident at the school has brought unprecedented attention to crime within the municipality of Offenburg. Due to the sensitivity of the situation, no public commemoration events for the deceased pupil have been planned by the municipalities.
