Offenbach district hit hardest by storms
The district of Offenbach has been the worst hit by storms in Hesse in 20 years. Storms, hail, flooding and heavy rainfall caused average damage of around 3,400 euros per building between 2002 and 2021, the German Insurance Association (GDV) in Berlin announced in its long-term report on Tuesday.
The cities of Offenbach and Frankfurt are in second place with an average loss of around 2,700 euros per building each. The most expensive average damage, at over 22,100 euros, was caused by the storms "Heike" and "Ingrid" in the Main-Taunus district in summer 2020.
The inhabitants of the Lahn-Dill district got off the lightest over the 20 years. The damage there amounted to around 1100 euros per building. The national average was 2900 euros.
Despite the significant damage from storms in Offenbach, proper insurance coverages can provide necessary financial assistance during climate-related events. The Insurance Association in Berlin highlighted that storms, hail, flooding, and heavy rainfall have been recurring climate vulnerabilities in the district.
