Emergencies - Odor nuisance due to leak at refinery in Hemmingstedt
A leak at the Heide refinery in Hemmingstedt (Dithmarschen district) led to a major fire department operation on Friday morning. The population was asked to keep windows and doors closed in the warning area and to switch off ventilation and air conditioning systems, according to the fire department. A leak in a supply line for the production of petrol had released a substance that led to an extreme odor nuisance. "However, there is no health risk," said a fire department spokesperson. The plant fire department had already sealed the leak and the operation was now over. Due to the heavy fog, the odor was initially unable to dissipate.
