How I solved today's Strands

As I guessed, I thought I should seek terms like "shells" or "seaglass." I was correct with the first one: there's SHELL. 🔵

So, right above that is the next clue: FOSSIL. 🔵

Just above that is STONE. 🔵

Above that is GLASS. 🔵

The word BEACH sits below that, which I assumed is part of the spangram, as it appears to be an overarching term for the puzzle's genre—yep, it joins up with COMBING to form the word BEACHCOMBING moving from right to left. 🟡

Next, DRIFTWOOD is discovered. 🔵

And finally, we have BOTTLE. 🔵

How to play Strands

Go to the New York Times' website to experience Strands. Still in its beta version, you won't find it in the NYT Games app yet.

When you begin, you'll encounter a game board with various letters, complemented by a clue giving insight into the puzzle's subject—for example, "Better with age." Your goal is to uncover words that embody the puzzle's theme.

The primary word to discover is the "spangram," which more directly conveys the puzzle's theme. (For example, the spangram for the puzzle with the theme "Better with age" is FERMENTED, describing products that allegedly improve with age.) Spangrams will stretch throughout the game board either from left to right or top to bottom (hence the name). After finding the spangram, it will be highlighted in yellow. Solving the spangram usually makes the rest of the puzzle a whole lot easier.

In Strands, words can travel in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonally), and you'll only utilize each letter once. The puzzle has only one correct solution. If you're struggling to solve the puzzle, you can submit any word over three letters long if it's not a theme word. When you submit three non-theme words, the "Hint" button will become active; if you click it, all the letters in one of the theme words will be highlighted for you. However, you'll still need to align the highlighted letters in the correct order to form a theme word. If there is already a hint on the board and you use another hint before solving for that word, the letter positions will be revealed for that word.

How to win at Strands

Unlike Connections or Wordle, you can't lose at Strands. Your submissions will either lead to finding a proper answer, get you tips to solve the puzzle, or initiate a reaction suggesting the word you typed in is too short or invalid. With no time limit and no end to your attempts, you win when you've successfully used all the letters on the board, meaning you've uncovered the spangram and all the theme words. Like other NYT games, once you solve the puzzle, a card pops up with your performance: blue dots 🔵 represent theme words you discovered, the yellow dot 🟡 pinpoints when you found the spangram, and the light bulb 💡 indicates words you received hints for.
