My approach to solving today's Strands

LIFT in the top right grabs my attention instantly 🔵, so I'm thinking we're looking for words related to raising objects.

ELEVATE catches my eye in the top left 🔵, too.

I find SUPPORT below LIFT. 🔵

I spot EXALT below ELEVATE. 🔵

Got NOHEART in the bottom left, but apparently it's not a theme word. CLUB isn't a theme word, either. Hmm, this one's got me stumped.

I spot BOOST down in the bottom left 🔵, which helps me find the spangram: ALLRISE. 🟡

HOIST catches my attention below the spangram. 🔵

Finally, I see LEVITATE. 🔵

A Guide to Playing Strands

You can play Strands on the New York Times website. It's still in its beta phase, so it's not yet available in the NYT Games app.

When you start playing, you'll see a game board with a handful of letters and a clue that hints at the puzzle's theme - it'll be a phrase like "Age improves with time." Your job is to find the hidden words on the board that fit the theme.

The key word here is the "spangram," which is a word that describes the puzzle's theme more explicitly. (For example, the spangram for the puzzle with the theme "Age improves with time" is FERMENTED.) The spangram will stretch across the entire board, either from left to right or top to bottom (hence the name). When you find the spangram, it'll be highlighted in yellow. Finding the spangram typically makes the rest of the puzzle much easier to solve.

In Strands, words can go in any direction (up, down, left, right, and diagonal), and you can only use each letter once. There's only one correct solution. As you identify one of the puzzle's words (like KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI), it'll be highlighted in blue.

If you're having trouble solving the puzzle, you can submit any non-theme words you spot (as long as they're four letters or more) to earn credit toward a single hint. If you submit three non-theme words, the "Hint" button will be clickable; if you click it, all the letters in one of the theme words will be highlighted for you. You'll still have to connect these highlighted letters in the right order to create one of the theme words. If a hint is already on the board and you use another hint before solving for that word, its letter order will be revealed.

How to Win at Strands

Unlike Connections and Wordle, you can't lose at Strands. When you submit guesses, you either find an answer, earn credit toward a hint, or the board will shake, indicating the word you entered is too short or incorrect. You can't run out of guesses, and there's no time limit.

You win by using all the letters on the board to identify the spangram and all of the theme words. As with other NYT games, once you finish the puzzle, you'll see a sharable card that shows your progress: blue dots 🔵 represent theme words you found, the yellow dot 🟡 signifies when you found the spangram, and a lightbulb 💡 indicates words you had hints for.

How I solved today's Strands

LIFT in the upper right corner stands out immediately 🔵, so it's likely we're looking for words related to lifting objects.

I find ELEVATE in the upper left corner. 🔵

Below LIFT is SUPPORT. 🔵

I notice BOLSTER in the lower left, but it's not a theme word. SOLVE isn't a theme word, either. This one's proving tricky.

I locate EXALT underneath ELEVATE. 🔵

Next, I spot BOOST in the lower left 🔵, which helps me find the spangram: ALLRISE. 🟡

HOIST catches my eye beneath the spangram. 🔵

And, lastly, LEVITATE. 🔵
