Nutella changes its formula
Nutella has been a staple at breakfast tables for many years. Despite rumors about its unhealthiness, people still enjoy it as a spread on toast or bread. Yet, changes are on the horizon.
The popularity of Nutella is undeniable. It's no secret that Ferrero, its manufacturer, produces around 250,000 tons of the hazelnut-hazelnut cream in 75 countries each year. The inventors of this delicious treat are the Italians. However, Germany is the largest consumer of the brown indulgence; they produce approximately 90 million jars annually to meet domestic demand. The average consumption per person is a whopping one kilogram per year! Consequently, Nutella reigns supreme as the market leader among hazelnut-hazelnut creams.
Even adults find it difficult to resist the temptation of Nutella on bread. It's unclear what exactly goes into the making of Nutella, but its secret recipe is jealously guarded. In 2017, a change in the recipe raised eyebrows. This marked the first time a valuable ingredient was replaced to cut costs while maintaining the same price. Cocoa, one of the more expensive ingredients, was a likely candidate for reduction.
Ingredients-wise, Nutella is mostly sugar and palm fat, with a few hazelnuts, some cocoa, and a small amount of skimmed milk powder.
A vegan-friendly option is in the works
However, Ferrero cannot ignore the times and wants to cater to the vegan market as well. This has led to plans for a vegan version of Nutella, as reported by "Food News." The milk powder will be replaced with a plant-based ingredient. Palm oil, which has received criticism, will still be used. Thus, starting in the fall, both the classic and the plant-based version of Nutella should be available in supermarkets.
It's not clear if and when the new variant will reach us. But, given Ferrero's ambitious plans, it's highly likely. Moreover, Ferrero has filed for a new word-image trademark at the German Patent and Trademark Office in Munich on December 7, 2023 (Az.: 3020232455346). This revelation confirms that the plant-based version of Nutella will be vegan certified.
So, get ready for a new addition to your breakfast table!
