Construction work - Nuremberg-Bamberg railroad line closed for a week

Due to construction work, the Nuremberg-Bamberg railroad line will be closed again from Sunday (December 10) to December 16. Passengers will have to use replacement buses during this time, as announced by Deutsche Bahn. The transport company intends to use the seven-day closure to press ahead with the four-track expansion of the busiest railroad line in northern Bavaria.

16 bridges, two S-Bahn stations, the Eggolsheim overtaking station north of Forchheim and three culverts will be completed this year, according to Deutsche Bahn. In addition, around 20 kilometers of track will be laid, noise barriers erected and around 20 additional points installed along the route.

During the line closure, the S-Bahn line 1 coming from Nuremberg will only run as far as Fürth main station. It will then continue with replacement buses to Erlangen and on to Bamberg. The Franken-Thüringen-Express will be replaced by express buses between Nuremberg and Bamberg.

Long-distance services are also affected by the closure. The ICE Munich-Berlin will be rerouted between Nuremberg and Erfurt via Würzburg, which will extend the journey time by around 90 minutes, according to Deutsche Bahn. The ICE stops in Erlangen, Bamberg and Coburg will be canceled during this period, as will the ICE Sprinter from Munich to Berlin. The Intercity on the Karlsruhe/Stuttgart route via Nuremberg to Leipzig will end or begin in Nuremberg.

The S-Bahn line 6 from Nuremberg to Neustadt an der Aisch will also be canceled between December 10 and 16 due to the rerouting of long-distance trains. This is because it runs on the same tracks as the ICE between Nuremberg and Würzburg.

Instead, replacement buses will run between Neustadt an der Aisch and Siegelsdorf station (Fürth district). From there, regional trains will continue to Fürth and Nuremberg. The booster trains on the Würzburg-Kitzingen line will also have to make way for the diverted ICE traffic.

After the one-week closure, the 62-kilometer route between Nuremberg main station and Bamberg station will be largely four-track, the railroad announced.

This means that two separate tracks will then be available for the S-Bahn, which will enable much more frequent service. Until now, the S-Bahn has only run once an hour from Nuremberg to Bamberg, stopping at almost 20 stations and stops in between. From the district town of Forchheim, the S-Bahn will run to the major cities of Erlangen, Fürth and Nuremberg at 20-minute intervals during peak times from December 17.
