Incidents on the A20 Road - Numerous procedures resulted from intense downpours and tempests.
Severe rainstorms and thunder on Thursday resulted in various incidents requiring the assistance of firefighters and the police in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. On the A20 highway, two accidents occurred as a result of aquaplaning. Additionally, a home in Stralsund was struck by lightning, and a road there was flooded so severely that a large hole developed.
The German Meteorological Service (DWD) reported significant rainfall in the west of the state on Thursday and through the night. At the station in Rothemühl (Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald), an astounding 43 liters of rain per square meter were recorded within 24 hours. DWD meteorologist Karsten Kürbis commented on this to the German Press Agency, stating that such heavy rainfall in summer is rare. However, he also emphasized that these events are localized. Comparatively, only about two liters of rain fell per square meter in Rostock during this same period.
As a result of the rain, deep trenches formed on the A20 highway, causing at least two cars to lose control due to aquaplaning. On Thursday evening in the Landkreis Vorpommern-Greifswald, a 33-year-old man veered off the wet road, leading to his vehicle overturning. This incident left the man with serious injuries, prompting a trip to the hospital. Earlier, a car on the A20 in the Landkreis Mecklenburgische Seenplatte experienced the same fate during heavy rain and aquaplaning. The 24-year-old driver suffered minor injuries but likewise needed to be hospitalized.
A double house in Stralsund was severely damaged by a lightning strike on Thursday. The fire engulfed the roof. No one was harmed in the incident. The residents had departed the house before the fire department and the police arrived, and the estimated repair costs are pegged at 50,000 euros.
A road in Stralsund was so flooded that a massive hole around two by two meters large and a meter deep formed. The fire department took measures to secure this large hole on the Greifswalder Chaussee.
