A large crowd flocked to the German Folk Costume Festival in Wangen im Allgäu last Saturday, with attendees dressed in traditional clothing from all over the country. The northernmost participants came from Wyk auf Föhr while the southernmost group hailed from Vorarlberg.
Gunter Dlabal, the first deputy president of the German Folk Costume Association, shared that there were multiple stages and visitors constantly moving between the performances, making it hard to determine an exact count of attendees. Still, he estimated that around 4,000 to 5,000 people were present that day, as the town looked quite busy under the sunny skies.
Performances by folk costume groups were arranged at the Landscape Garden Show area and in the old town. Dlabal also mentioned that in the upcoming year, there will be an invitation to the German Folk Costume Festival 2024 from the Folk Costume Association, the city, and the Landscape Garden Show.
On Sunday morning, a parade is planned within the old town. Organizers anticipate 121 groups and over 4,000 participants. Traffic in the old town is set to be restricted from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the parade. Dlabal briefly commented on the event preceding the festival, noting that it would go on regardless of the weather, except if it were pouring down heavily.
The German Folk Costume Association boasts about a million members, with its mission primarily focused on home preservation, dialect, and mother tongue, folk songs, and dance.
Due to the flooding, the Landscape Garden Show in Wangen was shut down on June 1st. The city had issued a flood warning the day prior, resulting in the cancellation of events on the garden show grounds.
