- Numerous missions for police and rescue workers on the water
The growing water tourism in Berlin is leading to more speeding violations and noise disturbances, according to the water police. "People have taken over Berlin as an event and venue location," said Sabine Schumann of the water police. This is increasingly causing conflicts with residents, recreational athletes, or those seeking recreation.
With intensified controls during the water sports season, which officially runs from April 1 to October 31, the police are trying to ensure safety on Berlin's waters. In the 2023 season, police conducted 4,128 controls and inspected 8,188 sports boats. A total of 885 administrative offenses were registered in 2023, and 337 criminal charges were filed. The police have not yet provided figures for the current season.
Lifeguard and fire department rescues
The German Life-Saving Association (DLRG) has been called to 760 rescue operations on Berlin's waters so far this year. So far, there have been 8 drowning deaths, 2 fewer than in the same period last year. In total, 21 people have died from swimming and bathing in Berlin in 2023.
The Berlin fire department has had 88 rescue operations on waters, as a spokesperson said. So far this year, firefighters have been called out 45 times. However, it could not be confirmed whether there was actually a person in the water in all reported operations.
The increased number of speeding violations and noise disturbances in Berlin's waters has led the public to express concerns, urging the police to take action. During the 2023 water sports season, the police conducted numerous controls and inspections, registering a high number of administrative offenses and criminal charges.
