Number of wild boars shot declines again
Hunters in Brandenburg once again shot fewer wild boar in the 2022/23 hunting year. The number fell from around 58,300 to 45,550 hunted animals, according to the hunting statistics presented by the State Ministry of the Environment on Tuesday. According to the statistics, the number of animals shot fell for almost all game species. The number of roe deer shot also fell from 52,500 to around 48,800 animals. The number of foxes shot fell by 5 percent and that of hares by 19 percent.
According to the information provided, the number of wild boar shot must be viewed against the backdrop of African swine fever, which has been particularly prevalent in the eastern districts of Brandenburg since September 2020. Against this backdrop, hunters have been urged to increase the hunting of wild boar throughout the state since 2018. After the record years of 2019/20 (102,500 kills) and 2020/21 (90,300 kills), the shooting figures have fallen significantly, it was reported.
The decline in wild boar hunting could be linked to the ongoing prevalence of African swine fever in Brandenburg, a disease that has affected wild boar populations since September 2020. Despite calls for increased wild boar hunting since 2018, the number of animals hunted has significantly decreased from the record years of 2019/20 and 2020/21.
Despite the decline in wild boar populations, hunters in Brandenburg have still been participating in hunting activities for other species such as roe deer, foxes, and hares, with noticeable decreases in the number of roe deer and hare hunted.
