Number of school enrollments in MV down against the national trend
Around 14,800 children started school in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the 2023/2024 school year, slightly fewer than in the previous year. The decline amounted to 0.6 percent, according to data published by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Monday. According to the data, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Thuringia (minus 0.7 percent) are the only two federal states in which the number of children enrolled in school has fallen.
According to preliminary figures, around 830,600 children started school nationwide in fall 2023, the highest number in 20 years. Compared to the previous year, the increase is 2.1 percent. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the increase is due to higher birth rates and increased immigration, especially of children from Ukraine.
Baden-Württemberg recorded the most significant increase at 6.9%. This was followed by Saarland (plus 6 percent) and Bremen (plus 5.6 percent).
Despite the national trend of increasing school enrollments, schools in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern saw a decrease of 0.6%, as reported by the Statistics published by the Federal Statistical Office. Analyzing the statistics further, it was noted that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Thuringia were the only two federal states with a decline in school enrollments.
