Number of private households in Thuringia continues to shrink
According to a survey, the number of private households in Thuringia will once again fall significantly by 7.3 percent over the next 20 years. The number of people living in households will fall much more sharply by 2042, with a decrease of 9.4 percent, the state statistics office announced on Friday. According to this, more than one million households are expected in the state in 2042, with around 1.9 million people living in them. The reasons for this are the general population loss and the reduction in household sizes.
According to the statisticians, single households were the most common in Thuringia last year (459,000). That was 42.3 percent of all households, 35.4 percent were two-person households. By 2042, the proportion of single households (442,000) will increase by a further 1.6 percentage points, while the proportion of households with two or more people will decrease.
As a result, the average household size is expected to fall from 1.92 to 1.89 people per household between 2022 and 2042. The future shifts are mainly due to the decline in the number of residents aged between 35 and 65 (minus 19.9%) and those under 20 (minus 11.5%).
The current population living in private households in Thuringia is approximately 1.9 million people. Despite the decrease in the number of private households, the overall population loss and reduced household sizes are contributing to a projected increase in the number of single households, making up 442,000 single households by 2042.
