More people were employed in Hesse in the third quarter of 2023 than ever before. A total of 3.6 million people were employed, according to preliminary calculations released by the State Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Tuesday. This figure includes the self-employed and their supporting family members as well as all employees and civil servants, regardless of their working hours.

Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, this represents an increase of 1.1 percent. The financial, insurance and business service providers sector saw the strongest growth with an increase of 1.7% compared to the same period last year.

Compared to the second quarter of 2023, the number of people in employment rose by 0.3%. According to the statisticians, the seasonal growth this summer was more subdued than the average for the pre-crisis years 2015 to 2019 (Hesse: 0.5%; Germany: 0.6%).
