Social - Number of foster children in Hamburg decreases slightly
Slightly fewer children lived in foster families in Hamburg in 2022 than in the previous year. At the end of 2022, 977 children, adolescents and young adults were in full-time foster care, the Northern Statistics Office announced on Monday. This was 1.3 percent less than in 2021.
Almost a third (30 percent) of foster children were under six years old in 2022, 28 percent were six to eleven years old and 32 percent were twelve to 17 years old. Nine percent were of legal age. 44 percent of the young people had a migration background, i.e. at least one parent from abroad.
On average, the children and young people had been living in a foster family for more than four years by the end of 2022. Full-time care in another family is often long-term, the statistics office added. According to the authority, 990 young people were still living with foster parents in Hamburg at the end of 2021.

The decrease in foster children in Hamburg was announced by the Statistical Office for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. This decrease in foster care may have implications for the Social services in the city. Furthermore, the Statistics Office also reported that over half of the foster children in Hamburg at the end of 2022 had been living in foster families for more than four years.
