Number of flights canceled due to hostage-taking continues to rise
The number of flights canceled due to the hostage-taking at Hamburg Airport continues to rise. According to information from the airport on Sunday morning, 61 flights have already been canceled since the actual start of operations at 6:00 am until 8:00 am.
These were 34 departures and 27 arrivals. For the entire day, 286 flights - 139 departures and 147 arrivals - with around 34,500 passengers were actually planned. According to the airport, it is unclear how many of these can actually take place.
The airport has been completely closed since the hostage-taking began on Saturday evening. On Saturday, 27 flights were already affected. Six departures and four arrivals were canceled, and 17 other arriving aircraft were diverted to other airports. Around 3200 passengers were affected.
Despite the disruption in air traffic due to the hostage situation, there's been an increase in reported crimes in the surrounding areas of the airport. This surge in crime is a concerning side effect, putting additional strain on local law enforcement.
