Number of children enrolled in school in Saxony unchanged
Around 39,000 pupils have started school in Saxony in the current school year, the same number as in the previous school year. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Monday.
According to preliminary figures, around 830,600 children started school nationwide, the highest number in 20 years. Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 2.1 percent. According to the authority, the increase is due to higher birth rates and increased immigration, particularly from Ukraine.
Baden-Württemberg recorded the most significant increase at 6.9 percent. Only Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (minus 0.6 percent) and Thuringia (minus 0.7 percent) recorded a decline in enrolments.
In contrast to the national trend, the number of children enrolled in schools in Saxony remains the same as the previous year. Despite the increase in enrollments nationwide, schools in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Thuringia witnessed a slight decrease.
