Crime - Number of ATM explosions in Saarland increased in 2023

In Saarland, investigators have registered twelve cases of ATM explosions in the current year (as of 12.12.2023). By comparison, there were only three cases in the state in 2022 and six in 2021. This was announced by the state police headquarters in Saarbrücken at the request of the German Press Agency. Of the twelve cases in the current year, there were eight cases of theft (2022: none), and in four cases the perpetrators did not succeed.

Some of the cases can be attributed to supra-regional series whose investigations have not yet been completed, it said. In Saarland, no suspects were arrested immediately after committing a crime between 2020 and 2023.

According to the report, two criminal offences are usually committed at the same time: causing an explosion of explosives and theft in a particularly serious case. The police consider an offense to be complete as soon as one of these two elements is fulfilled. For reasons of principle, the state police headquarters did not provide any information about the amount of money stolen.

The state of Saarland, known for its low crime rate, has seen a significant rise in ATM-related crimes, as highlighted by this year's twelve cases of explosions. The state police headquarters in Saarbrücken, the region's law enforcement authority, confirmed this trend.

The German Press Agency mentioned that the ATM blasting incidents in 2023 occurred in various parts of Saarland, leading to a surge in criminality in the region, with a focus on ATMs as the main target.
