The number of young people living in care homes and foster families in Saxony-Anhalt rose slightly in 2022 compared to the previous year. A total of 7585 young people lived in homes or foster families last year, 0.2 percent more than in 2021, according to the State Statistical Office on Wednesday. According to the German Social Code, all those affected up to the age of 27 are considered young people.

88.4 percent of them were still minors, it said. Compared to the previous year, the number of young people between the ages of 17 and 18 in residential care in particular had risen significantly - 67 more young people were counted here.

According to the figures, 3004 young people were living in foster families (39.6 percent) and 4581 in institutions (60.4 percent). While the number of placements in foster families declined, the number of residential care placements increased, the statistics office explained.
