The national squad is being discussed. - Nübel's useful goalkeeping training: "Numerous challenges experienced"
Alexander Nuessler is excited to soak up the learning experience that comes with playing in the EUROs. He spoke about this during the German national team's press conference in Blankenhain. "I'm giving it my all. I'm happy to be here, directly at a major tournament at home. I'm taking it as it comes and am incredibly excited about it," the 27-year-old goalkeeper from VfB Stuttgart shared.
He clarified that the much-discussed challenging relationship with Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, which prevented him from displacing Neuer at the club, is just normal. "A lot is written that is not true," Nuessler said. He also mentioned that Neuer is still his role model, adding, "What he has done for Germany is unimaginable."
No planned meeting with national coach Julian Nagelsmann has taken place yet for Nuessler, but he knows his role as the fourth of the German EM goalkeepers. He sees himself as an apprentice. It was unexpected for him to be chosen as a replacement for Bernd Leno, who withdrew due to a shoulder injury. This led to him cancelling his planned safari vacation.
Nuessler's journey in football hasn't been easy. He has openly discussed the tough times following his departure from Schalke 04, the disappointing goals in the 2020/21 season, and his struggle to displace Neuer at FC Bayern. In Munich, he only made four league appearances. His first loan at AS Monaco left him feeling rejected, which made him question the football business.
Things improved at VfB Stuttgart. The team's resurgence is also linked to his contributions. His contract with Bayern was extended to match his loan with Stuttgart. Nuessler acknowledged that challenging Neuer in Munich would be pointless, considering Neuer's fitness and presence.
Nuessler also has a perspective of playing for time in the national team. He's the only one below the age of 30 in the DFB quartet. With Neuer (38), Marc-Andre Ter Stegen (32), and Oliver Baumann (33) likely to retire soon, the World Cup 2026 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico could be tempting to give up his supporting role.
