Award - NRW mobility prize awarded: Project from Coesfeld wins

Transport Minister Oliver Krischer has awarded a mobility prize from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for the first time. The award, worth 15,000 euros, went to the district of Coesfeld in Essen on Monday for its "Mobile Münsterland Citizens' Laboratory".

The winning project aims to create mobility alternatives to the private car in rural areas. To this end, the district has already set up a new express bus route, its own e-scooter subscription and orderable car shuttles. Citizens can make further suggestions for improvement.

An expert jury selected five finalists from around 50 applications, which were then voted for in an online poll. Second and third place went to a project from Bottrop, which aims to use the heat from roads, and a project for on-demand public transport for Leverkusen and the Rheinisch-Bergisch district. They received 10,000 and 5,000 euros respectively.

"We have enormous challenges when it comes to the mobility of people and goods," said Krischer, explaining the initiative. "Everyone who travels on our railways, roads or cycle paths notices this." The NRW Mobility Award was created to provide a platform for innovative ideas and to find imitators.
