NRW law: municipalities to benefit from wind energy

Many more wind turbines are needed to switch to renewable energies. However, such projects often fail locally due to resistance from local residents. They are now to be enticed with money in NRW.

Energy - NRW law: municipalities to benefit from wind energy

Anyone who builds a new wind turbine or completely renovates a turbine in North Rhine-Westphalia must share the profits with residents and surrounding communities. This is provided for in a citizens' energy law passed by the state parliament on Friday with the votes of the governing CDU and Green parties.

All opposition groups - SPD, FDP and AfD - voted against. The leader of the FDP parliamentary group, Henning Höne, had previously tried unsuccessfully to prevent the law from being passed on the last day of this year's plenary session by means of an urgent application to the state constitutional court.

In his view, the government factions had tabled their twelve-page amendment at too short notice to be able to discuss the bill properly. However, the court did not follow his request, meaning that the law has now passed its third reading in the state parliament. It will enter into force on January 1, 2024.
