Social affairs - NRW food banks are looking for helpers: over 600,000 people in need

The food banks in North Rhine-Westphalia are urgently looking for more helpers in view of the increased number of people in need. "The food banks are doing their best, but can barely cope with all the extra work," said Petra Jung, deputy head of the regional food bank association. Among other things, they are looking for drivers to transport food. So far, around 12,600 people in Germany's most populous federal state are already volunteering at the food banks.

The state association could well imagine offering significantly more positions for the Federal Volunteer Service or for the long-term unemployed, said Jung. Around 80 "Buftis" are already helping out at the NRW food banks. Donations are also urgently needed - to cover increased fuel, heating and electricity costs, among other things.

More than 170 regional food banks with over 500 distribution points provide people in poverty in NRW with surplus but good quality food. According to the regional food bank association, the number of people in need has soared to well over 600,000 as a result of the war in Ukraine and the recent disproportionate rise in food prices.
