Nature or Surroundings - NRW examines digital construction resource credentials.
To promote more environmentally friendly construction practices, North Rhine-Westphalia is planning to digitally record the materials used in buildings for future recycling. This plan is set to be tested in investment projects within residential construction or modernization. Interested parties can apply for participation in the public housing promotion 2024 during the application process, and the ministry will choose up to ten model projects.
The primary focus is on modernization projects due to the challenge of creating digital building resource passes in this area. Projects involving apprentice or student housing are also included.
The aim is to track the amount of concrete, steel, wood, and other materials used in a building. Currently, the energy certificate is the standard for real estate and only takes into account a building's CO2 consumption during operation. In the future, the goal is to measure a building's total CO2 footprint, including its recyclability, throughout its lifecycle. This information will be collected to gain valuable experiences in construction practice.
This initiative was also mentioned in the coalition agreement of the traffic light coalition, consisting of the SPD, FDP, and Greens. Construction and demolition waste make up a significant portion of Germany's annual waste production.

In line with this focus on sustainable construction, the city of Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia is also participating in the initiative. The digital tracking of construction materials, such as concrete, steel, and wood, will be a key component of the city's future construction projects. Additionally, the city is emphasizing the importance of recycling and reducing waste, aligning with the broader goals of North Rhine-Westphalia and the German government.
