- NRW Event: Security Personnel Escaped Unchecked Screening
The security personnel brought in for the NRW Day in Cologne by private firms didn't undergo a background check prior to their employment. This was corroborated by the NRW Interior Ministry after an inquiry. Furthermore, they defended Cologne, the event's organizer, stating that such vetting wasn't included in the security plan, which was in line with the police's coordination.
According to the Interior Ministry, the NRW Day was portrayed as a family-oriented civic event. The vast event space in Cologne was open to all, without any restrictions or access checks.
No Need for Screening
While a reliability and security screening of the security personnel wasn't performed, it was neither sought nor deemed necessary in hindsight. The NRW Day saw a significant police presence.
As reported by WDR and subsequently confirmed by the police, two individuals were prohibited from serving as security personnel at the NRW Day due to their past run-ins with the law, specifically during a traffic stop. A background check revealed their links to numerous criminal activities. Over 200,000 attendees and high-profile politicians such as North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister President, Hendrik Wüst (CDU), graced the NRW Day.
Despite the lack of background checks for the hired security personnel, the police played a substantial role at the NRW Day.In light of the past misconduct discovered during a traffic stop, two individuals who were initially intended to serve as security personnel for the NRW Day were barred by the police due to their criminal history.
