November pogrom 85 years ago: Website about the events

85 years after the November pogroms against Jews by the National Socialists, the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation has published the first complete overview of the events in Thuringia at that time. A new website documents riots in almost 50 locations in Thuringia, as the foundation announced on Monday. It was compiled by students at the University of Jena, the Jena University and State Library and the Foundation together with amateur historians and history initiatives. The website will be officially launched on Thursday, the anniversary of the November pogroms.

On the night of November 9-10, 1938, the National Socialists burned down synagogues across Germany, mistreated Jews and vandalized their homes and businesses. Not only Nazi organizations such as the SS and SA and the police took part in the wave of violence, many civilians also attacked and robbed their neighbors. Across Germany, more than 1,300 people lost their lives. In Thuringia, more than 800 men were deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp, and more than 30,000 people were sent to concentration camps throughout Germany. The wave of violence was the prelude to the systematic murder of the Jewish population, the Holocaust.

Work on the website, which also documents the stories of the victims and sheds light on the motivation of the perpetrators, took around a year, according to the foundation. The special thing about it is that many local historians are involved who have been doing "valuable research work" for years. However, this has often only been known to insiders. The site is part of the portal "Nine centuries of Jewish life in Thuringia".

The Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation's new website, launched to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the November pogroms, provides a comprehensive history of the events in Thuringia, during which National Socialists orchestrated attacks against Jews. This online resource, compiled with help from students and local historians, serves as a testament to the riots that occurred in nearly 50 locations across Thuringia, echoing the violence and hatred of National Socialism.
