Recently, German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) revealed tighter regulations concerning the sale of nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) to youths. This has been a topic of debate due to its popularity as a party drug. People often inhale this euphoria-inducing substance through balloons or gas cartridges.

The German Society for Neurology cautioned against its use, as frequent consumption could lead to accidents or even neurological issues. Permanent damage is also a possibility. In Germany, nitrous oxide, which is used industrially or medically, is presently available for purchase as a propellant for aerosol cans or as a foaming agent in capsules with no restrictions.
