Not just amazed: Heidenheim wants to impress FC Bayern
With the success of the 2-0 win against VfB Stuttgart in mind, Bundesliga newcomers 1. FC Heidenheim also want to give a good account of themselves at FC Bayern Munich. When you face the record soccer champions, you have to be bold, said coach Frank Schmidt one day before the game on Saturday (3.30pm/Sky). "That we don't fall into passivity and just run after them." They also had the confidence to do so in April 2019, when the then second-division side only narrowly lost 4-5 in Munich in the DFB Cup after a strong performance. It was the only competitive match between the two clubs to date.
Schmidt demanded that his team "give everything 100 percent" against Bayern. "Otherwise you have no chance and then FC Bayern can roll over you." The 8-0 defeat of fellow promoted side Darmstadt 98 in Munich recently is a cautionary tale for the Heidenheim side. Schmidt also explained that his team had to win the ball early in midfield to avoid having to constantly battle with the high tempo of Bayern's attack.
Although FCH ended a negative run of four consecutive defeats in competitive matches with their win in the Swabian clash against VfB on Sunday, they are one of the weakest away teams in the league with just one point from five games so far. Schmidt will be without striker Marvin Pieringer (laceration).
- Despite being one of the weakest away teams in the Bundesliga with only one point from five games, 1. FC Heidenheim is determined to give a strong performance against FC Bayern Munich, just like they did in their close 4-5 loss in the DFB Cup in 2019.
- For their upcoming match against Bundesliga giants FC Bayern Munich, 1. FC Heidenheim's coach Frank Schmidt emphasized the importance of not falling into passivity and urged his team to take on Bayern's high tempo attack by winning the ball early in midfield.
